BAMMA comes to Syfy
Syfy is the new home of the British Association of Mixed Martial Arts (BAMMA). We'll be broadcasting BAMMA 5 live from the MEN arena in Manchester on Saturday 26th February where Paul Daley and Yuya Shirai will go head to head.
You can read the full announcement here.
Over the coming weeks we'll be bringing you more info about the event and the fighters taking part.
We'd love to hear what you think of this new partnership between Syfy and BAMMA.
BAMMA Sound like good Sci Fi.............. :-(
We lost Terminator S.C and Caprica for this.........
So when do the name change to ITV or BBC and we get TV dramas????
I'm unable to equate sci fi with BAMMA. I was rather baffled by the recent spate of kung fu movies, too. I figured someone with an unchallenged controlling influence in programming chose to evangelise about another of their personal interests.
The genres of sci fi and kung fu are distinct and almost completely unrelated, with a possible Big Trouble In Little China-type overlap. The genre of live martial arts sports broadcasting, though, is absolutely unconnected to sci fi. It is not possible to qualify this as relevant programming.
Since when has MMA ever been in the realms of Sci-fi or fantasy, this is the most absurd thing I have ever heard. I hope to god this doesn't take off!!!!!!
Focus on delivering what SyFy should quality Sci-Fi series, films one off related dramas
Some ones head should roll for making this decision.
Yours one seriously annoyed SyFy viewer
Hi everyone,
Hope that this is a one off, not new programming. Here in the States we got stuck with WWE Smackdown on Fri. Nights and NXT was running on Tues. nights. While wrestiling is fiction is it really science fiction?
Fri. used to be the go to night for the SCI FI channel, then they re-branded as they called it and it went to Hell in a handbasket real quick.
Have a good week end.
Remember when hunting monsters, chainsaws work better than stakes unless you're the Slayer.
CATE
If nothing else, it's got people talking!
I suppose with all the Kung Fu films on over Christmas this was just the next step to bring in BAMMA.
As much as I like Kung Fu films and Martial Arts programmes they're not really appropriate for the Syfy channel.
I'd rather endure repeats of older Syfy than this.
It's interesting....
I suppose there is no real channel that does martial arts etc so it looks like it's been targeted to reach a specific audience - and that audience is us!
As Cate said it's what they did in the States with WW-Wrestling etc, and lots of sy fy fans complain about it there, because it is nothing to do with sci-fi and is taking up precious programme time which could be used for other / Real science fiction.!.. I honestly think the more cult type sports are better suited to the variety-male-orientated channels like Bravo or MTV etc.. and that's where they should go!
Although saying that - I am extremely glad we are NOT getting WWW! I suppose 'Sy Fy' have to get their dosh from somewhere to be able to bring us anything at all, but to link up with alternative 'sports' well I dunno...? - It does match the image of the nerdy young man glued to a sci-fi / fantasy/ war / kung-fu type game so it's not that big a step to our TV screen... It would be interesting to see exactly just what the mixture is, but it also depends on the times and how much !
What has Martial Arts got to do with Science Fiction, apart from movies like Myth?
I for one will be switching over to another channel and of course you've then got to persuade me to switch back when its over.
i am confused why syfi channel is showing mma and wonder whether to expect a name change but i am glad someone has the guts to show mma on a non subscription channel. it may not be up to standard of the ufc but they are plenty of good fighters coming through the ranks and using bamma to do that.
Well done syfi channel!!
Don't want it, shan't be watching it - are you really trying to alienate loyal viewers? A sad day for the channel - it is one step on a slippery downhil slope. MTV started showing programmes rather than music videoa and has ended up showing no music vids at all on it's original channel. If this is the way it is going then give us SyFy2 so we can see shows we want and not nonsense like this
It seems a very odd idea to screen something that will drive a lot of regular viewers to anoher channel. I see there is another one coming up - I can hardly avoid the fact given how often you seem to be plugging it.
So that will be another night I'll switch over and wont bother switching back, and I can't image that I'll be alone.
I'm a big MMA fan and a big Sci Fi fan - might not be the most obvious fit but who cares?
BAMMA are the best in the UK and thank god a mainstream channel has had the testicular fortitude to show support to MMA
Hopefully (but not likely) the existing audience will keep an open mind like the channel has
Either way, there's hundreds of thousands of new fans coming anyway
WAR SEMTEX!
I for one cannot see what all the fuss is about its only 1 hour out of a day full of Sy Fy programs.
Im really looking forward to seeing something abit different for a change and hopfully get a chance to watch some out of this world fighting.
I think its because this could be the thin edge of the wedge. As has been pointed out MTV started off with a small amount of non music programming and look at it now.
I think the channel are in a difficult position. When it first started, the sort of shows that were available didn't interest the other channels, but now that the genre has grown more popular the best shows are creamed off by the likes of Sky. The only reason i'd even consider watching BAMMA is if this idiot I know who is into that sort of thing was participating and getting trashed. Unfortunately he is apparently quite good at it, so it's unlikely to happen.
Whilst there are shows that no-one seems to have picked up yet that I'd rather see: The Cape, The Middleman, even some oldies like The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne, I'm not sure that they'd necessarily draw a larger audience/more ad revenue.
I have nothing against martial arts but I have the Sci-Fi channel because I want to watch...
Science Fiction!
I totaly agree with the sentiments previously voiced above if SYFY is intending on going down the MTV track it is going to LOOSE veiwers big time
I didn't even know Syfy existed and I like scifi. Now, thanks to BAMMA, it is on my favorites list.
Hi, newcomer here. will the show just start on the website or is there something i have to do in advance to watch it?
I can't see any links to do anything so far but don't want to leave it to the last minute.
Cheers
Bailey
I also need to know how to watch this online? Bammatv website directs us here and says we can watch it for just $5 but there is no links or anything to purchase or stream this live?
Please help!
Hi garyl2k,
Unfortunately we did not stream BAMMA5 live on this website, at present it is only possible to see BAMMA programme on our channel which is available on Sky 114 and Virgin 135.
We'll be sure to bring you information on the BAMMA6 event in the near future.
The Syfy Team
TOP show guys!
Fights were amazing, show was great and as somebody lucky enough to get to the event and then watch it later on your fab channel I was impressed!
Roll on BAMMA 6 in May.
Delighted to see this being mixed in through the schedule, counting down the days until V S2!!
WTF?
I stop posting for a little while and they turn it into the SfFu channel.
LOL.
See! It's all your fault.
Damn.
I thought that Fists of Fury on Syfy was only reserved for those late Sat night movies *shifty*
hummm - 'British Association of Mixed Martial Arts' ! - all well and good but is it?
I hate that our Sy Fy channel is showing sport and virtual ghost-hunters and if it is anything to go by - no doubt we will follow our US Parent Sy Fy Channel and start showing the science of ... cooking ! YUK !
How long before the 'M-M' goes out of BAMMA and we just get wrestling?
Why doesn't Sy Fy just change it's name to The VGWCs Channel? (virtual ghost-hunter wrestling cooks) - then it can be like all the other clone channels showing the same boring, useless virtual rubbish and just forget about sci - fi ?
How long before the 'M-M' goes out of BAMMA and we just get wrestling?
BAMMA - MM = BAA.
Sheep/goat wrestling? A bit of a specialist market, there.
How about SF Cooking? I own the "Babylon 5 Cookbook". Never made anything out of it as there's always some expensive/obscure but critical ingredient. In fact, genre cookbooks seem to be a bit of a sub-genre: http://www.toplessrobot.com/2010/02/the_10_most_essential_cookbooks_in_the_nerd_kitche.php
If it was cheaper, I'd get the Middle Earth one and cook something from it for Mme LeMarchand.
Don't forget the Ninjabread Men either!
( I own the "Babylon 5 Cookbook".) ......
YOU DON'T !!!!!
(and as there are no menu codes or smilies on the message boxes anymore then this should be in italics with a 'shocked' smiley attached!)
LOL ! ..
(I own a genuine 'Thomas Cook' - Galactic Tours, but haven't been anywhere cos they've got no prices..)
:p
I hate watching sports, I like science fiction and science fantasy, what has BAMA fighting got to do with your core channel - science fiction?
I for one will not be watching, I just wish I could cancel the monies you get from my Virgin subscription to put on this rubbish.
and I turn to SyFy hoping for some, I don't know, science fiction to find that the evening's been swallowed by hours of sweaty dick-punching. Wonderful. This is what SyFy's stooped to? You know, there isn't exactly a dearth of sports or reality programming on other channels; all this has done is made me look elsewhere, and I suspect that the channel will haemorrhage viewers if this sort of rubbish continues.
Used to be my favourite channel but now rarely watch it! 'Cos I like Sci Fi and there isn't too much of it now.
Now we have - bamma, on top of the movies which are truly appalling. The old Godzilla vs whatever were better made, and more fun!
Been really put off too by the 'Hokey Cokey' school of filming. Put your camera in, your camera out, in, out, in, out and shake it all about, etc.
Did attempt to watch one film that might have been OK (that's all maybe/might) but after a short time I gave up. I had motion sickness. Felt ill for hours afterwards. Won't be watching bamma either
On the plus side new channel ids (or whatever they are called) are very nice (Can't recommend much else!.) Wondering if SyFy spent all their money on them so can't afford to show Sci Fi.
Sorry to say, but SyFy is beginning to resemble a poor Public access channel.
I agree of course but they say the reason we have Wrestling is to subsidise the Channel to be able to afford new shows... - we do get new series quite often but that's about it.. they never have endings and the shows themselves - as said above, are tending to Not to be sci-fi in content (wrestling / ghost hunter/ reality and now cooking as per the US Channel.. which means we'll get it next...)
I suppose if you all really feel strongly enough to complain about it - it's no good coming on here because all everyone does is vent their stuff to all the other like-minded fans who already live here, and no one else (definitely not any kind of Channel programme director or CEO) sees it..!
The very best thing would be to actually PHYSICALLY WRITE A LETTER TO NBC who own the Channel and make a complaint
- it is waay better than sticking a 'thumbs-up' on a Facebook or Twitter "Save our SyFy" page, - Or filling out an online Petition which, because it is in cyberspace - carries no weight and goes nowhere....
-But, if you actually take the trouble to put pen to paper and post your real letter to a real person or office, then they usually have to take some kind of notice ..
The address is on the 'contact us' link on the bottom of the SyFy Homepage.

On the one hand I find it worrying that a 9 pm time slot would be given over to this, on the other hand it may introduce those not familiar with Sci-fi tv to the genre, but I have doubts about this.
As long as this is not the beginning(or test phase) for flooding the channel with other types of progamming, as an irregular feature I have no issue, I just won't be watching.
