Have you ever noticed that when a sci-fi book or film depicts a utopian future it’s actually dystopia in disguise? Humans starved of their emotions and individuality; an Omni-present Big Brother type hovering over the landscape; a proletarian revolution; and so on. Pretty bleak stuff. Here at syfy.co.uk we want to create the real thing. A utopia for the sci-fi community where disagreement breeds discussion and non-understanding brings enlightenment. As with Star Trek’s United Federation of Planets there’s bound to be problems along the way. But if you take a few minutes to read the community guidelines below you can help us achieve our dream. [b:ztat0z4q]

1. Respect the community and its members.[/b:ztat0z4q]

[b:ztat0z4q]- Abuse:[/b:ztat0z4q] We’re all here for the same purpose, to discuss the universe of sci-fi. So let’s do that. Discuss. Not rant or abuse individuals, groups or companies. Any kind of abuse against individuals or groups, other than entirely fictional ones, will not be tolerated.

[b:ztat0z4q]- We don’t need to see it:[/b:ztat0z4q] Sharing is a key part of any community, but there are some things the sci-fi community don’t want to see. They include porn, defamatory or derogatory jokes, offensive imagery and foul language – don’t forget sci-fi knows no generational boundaries.

[b:ztat0z4q]- Talent bashing:[/b:ztat0z4q] Opinions are great and we want as much discussion on the site as possible. Sci-fi is a subjective realm after all. But berating an actor, director, writer or anyone else with false or offensive rants is not acceptable. We all know when the line has been crossed. [b:ztat0z4q]

2. A spot of housekeeping.[/b:ztat0z4q]

[b:ztat0z4q]- Impersonation:[/b:ztat0z4q] Please do not pretend to be someone you are not or falsely represent yourself in any way. People thought to be impersonating someone else will be investigated by a moderator. Penalties for impersonation may not be limited to account deletion (please see our Privacy Policy).

[b:ztat0z4q]- Multiple accounts[/b:ztat0z4q]: Do not register for more than one account or register for an account on someone else’s behalf. Multiple accounts that are deemed to belong to the same person will be deleted.

[b:ztat0z4q]- Using the appropriate forums:[/b:ztat0z4q] Please keep threads in the relevant forums. This isn’t a court marshal offence, but topics may be moved by moderators if they appear in the wrong forums. If you think we’re missing an important topic with our forum list please get in touch with a moderator. [b:ztat0z4q]

3. No commercial use.[/b:ztat0z4q]

[b:ztat0z4q]- For the people:[/b:ztat0z4q] This site is for the enjoyment of the whole sci-fi community. Please don’t use it to push products onto people that they don’t want.

[b:ztat0z4q]- Spamming[/b:ztat0z4q] will not be tolerated. Any post that is deemed to be spam will be deleted, as will the account of the user who left it.

[b:ztat0z4q]- Linking:[/b:ztat0z4q] As stated above sharing is very welcome. But there are good links and there are bad links. Hopefully we all know which are which. Feel free to link to hot stories that you think will appeal to the community. But regular links to commercial ventures or offensive material will be subject to the moderator’s scrutiny.

[b:ztat0z4q]4. And Finally.[/b:ztat0z4q] [b:ztat0z4q]- Respect the moderators;[/b:ztat0z4q] they’re here to help, so please be nice to them.

As a new member of some advanced years, I thought hard about choosing a "syfy" related name. Before the advent of Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and Stingray; I remember watching (in black and white - at the time) Fireball XL5 and SuperCar. "Mitch the monkey" is from SuperCar (from the early sixties - I think?). Best wishes to all.
