It's an old question, but always a good one. Which of your favourite books (comics/graphic novels included) would you like to be turned into a film or TV show? There have been some good ones in recent years: Lord of the Rings, Stardust, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Tin Man, to name but a few, so any new show/film would have to be pretty good.

Personally, I'd love to see Magician, the first of Raymond E Feist's Riftwar Saga, and George RR Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice make it to the screen. I think they'd both suit a TV series better - far too much to fit into a film or even series of films. Perhaps even an animated series would work best, especially with Magician which covers a long period of time. As for comic, I'd love to see Slaine given the X-Men treatment.

HBO are still (allegedly) developing ASOIAF, I've got my fingers crossed.

Announced, but still either stalled or in early development and I wish they'd hurry up: At the Mountains of Madness, Phil Rickman's "Merrily Watkins" books, Larklight (kids' steampunk), Sandman, The Last Unicorn and Spares.

Not-yet-announced (AFAIK): Kim Newman's "Anno Dracula" series and GRRM's "Wild Cards".

Yay! LeMarchand's back! :) Seems like it's taking HBO as long to develop ASOFAI as it's taking GRRM to write it...

Maybe they're going slow so that they don't catch up with him.

I thought the latest book was going to be quicker because he'd already got it 1/2 written!

I keep checking his website but there's no news. He's had the same update on there since January.

I think he said recently at an interview that he is looking to finish about October for an early 2009 release. God knows how long it's going to take him to finish the rest of them.

------

As for the original question. Probably none as book translations tend to pale in comparison to the novels.

I would like to see the wild card series adapted for television, i dont think it would transfer well to silver screen, saying that Watchmen and Heroes owe a lot to this series.

And please before any ones starts screaming read the first novel then shut up.

I was wondering if "Jetboy" was a Wild Cards reference!

Most folk around here like GRRM's stuff (though mainly ASOIAF). I've read and own all the Wild Cards books up to "Inside Straight" (I even have the comics!). Have to disagree about "Watchmen" though - the first issue came out in '86 while the first "Wild Cards" novel was '87. (Though the RPG sessions that inspired the series were presumably going for a few years prior to that). I think it's just a case of synchronicity.

I'd love to see a film adaptation of The Silmarillion. The book is perhaps Tolkien's most epic work. But truthfully I don't think anyone - including Peter Jackson - could do it justice. It's a cliche but I'd say The Silmarillion is unfilmable.

The Silmarillion is unreadable never mind unfilmable.

I thought PJ was using parts of TS to expand "The Hobbit" to two films (and enable cast re-use).

I'm adding Philip Reeve's "Mortal Engines" quartet to my list. Not sure that it would work best as a TV series or 4 movies, but fear that the budget required to put giant tracked cities on screen would mean "Hollywooding up" the story to make the kids older/prettier and remove the devastating ending.

How about Steven King's Dark Tower series? I can see Hugh Jackman or Christian Bale playing Roland. For a more action driven film/series how about David Gemmel's Rigante novels.

How about a faithful adaptation of American Psycho. I really couldn't see that ever making it past the censors.

Did you not rate the Christian Bale version? I thought it was shockingly good - you almost became as crazy as him just watching him - was also a relief to find out that 'Fight Club' had the same sort of ending and that I didn't need to watch a whole bunch of beatings to get to it! (phew!)

I would like to see a film about the story of Galactus. I was reading his story on Wikipedia and it sounds incredible! Nothing at all like what I've come to expect from the Silver Surfer stories - in those you just see him as a brutish bullying slightly dim arch-fiend who feeds on planets, but apparently he was so much more, -a God sent to save our universe no less... ? - and there is a whole bunch of story that fills the gaps and was just never told, plus it would make an intersting film and could add a new mega super hero to our lists?

No, I do love the Bale version of American Psycho. For me Bale was absolutely perfect as Bateman. It will be hard for him to ever better that performance. So many great quotes. It would have been terrible if Dicaprio had gotten the role.

But as much as I love it it's not massively faithful, especially on the Psycho front. If they had played a bit more straight, without all the humour and with more of the violence I think they might have struggled bringing it to the screen, but it would have been interesting to see.

I`d love to see Mythago Wood made into a film, I`d heard that Terry Gilliam had the rights and had made a screenplay some year ago. Cant verify that though. If nobody does it soon I`m going to have to get of my backside and do it myself. I have already put some ideas on paper. Two other favourite stories I`d like to see on film are `Next of Kin` by Eric Frank Russell and `Deeper than Darkness` by Harlan Ellison.

Not heard that about "Mythago Wood", though I'm not sure Gilliam is a good match for the material.

It was written in 1984 and involves an area of woodland where time and space are distorted. Certain people can channel the energy flowing into the wood to create semi mythical beings, a bit like the monster from the ID in `Forbidden Planet` I first came across the book about 3 years ago.

I've read the book - and at least one of the sequels; it just doesn't seem "Gilliam" to me.

I`m not sure if Gilliam could do it or not, I`ve just heard that he had the rights some years ago. I`ve only seen a few of his films, Time bandits , the python films and, more recently, The brothers grimm.
I`d like to see the subject treated seriously though as otherwise it could end up like Spiderwick Chronicles, which had a loosely similar idea.

The author is called Jacqueline Davis and it is a thriller/crime with a twist , Natasha a young English girl in her early twenties is suffering from a congenital heart desease which has plagued her since birth. Finally reaching a climatic time in her life she realises her only chance of survival is a total heart transplant. Her life hanging by a thread, she takes her doctors advise with terrifying repercussions, with the new heart beating inside her she is thrust into a world where the hearts benefactor provides her with evidence of it's owners untimely death. No one understands her plight when visions take over her life and forge the way ahead for her to capture her benefactors murderer. With the aid of an understanding police inspector and a psychic medium who gave evidence ten years previous of ten similar murder cases of young girls, they both contrive to help Natasha and ultimately capture the murderer.Thrust into todays drug culture, the police inspectors investigations take him into the seedy side of life where three young vunerable lads are drawn into his evil circle, money and addiction sadly become more important than life itself. Natasha is plunged into the afterlife and back again to complete her cycle of life. The cursed souls of the murdered girls seek their revenge, can Natasha help them in their quest and does she succeed? Here is where I found her, I think it is fab and definitely would make a good film or series.

Hi, Lisa - you've posted it in the right place! Welcome to the forum.!

I've had a look at your question, but haven't got an answer (yet?) - someone else may know/have time to research, though.

Stephan Donaldson's Gap Series is perfect to be made into a six part mini series is probably my favourite Sci-fi set of books of all time and if you haven't read them yet I highly recommend them, And how about good old Druss the Legend perfect for a movie especially since films like gladiator and the subsequent movie that followed in that genre

I really must get around to the Gap series. That said, I read the first part of the current Covenant series and found it incredibly dull, so my interest in Donaldson is somewhat tempered (and I loved the first 2 trilogies).

Y'know, I'm pretty surprised that nobody has mentioned this one (well, OK, THESE ONES). I would LOVE to see Julian May's Pliocene Quartet either made into a series of movies (you listening Mr. Jackson?) or a Joss Whedon ongoing series. For those who are unfamiliar with them, they are: "The Many Coloured Land", "The Golden Torc", "The Non-Born King" and "The Adversary", with the linking novel "Intervention" leading on to "Jack The Bodiless", "Diamond Mask" and "Magnificat". Possibly the greatest set of fantasy/sci-fi/historical/romantic/psychological/epic series of books since LOTR.

Oh, and one more, that I suspect is unfilmable (but then again, I watched Clint Eastwood's treatment of "Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil", but got distracted by the snails whizzing by...*) which is Patrick Tilley's astonishing novel "Mission". I won't try to precis these books, but if anyone is interested, I might be persuaded to give it a go. Over a large cocktail...

(*But still rather FASTER than "Meet Joe Black" zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz )

Just a couple more while I think about it: Arthur C Clarke's "The Songs of Distant Earth" (including Mike Oldfield's fabulous album) and maybe, if someone's good enough "Imperial Earth" as well.
