The Top Ten Paranormal Counties

Posted by Darren Mann

Angel200.jpgAfter ten years of research and the analysis of 9,140 reports and stories, we're happy to present the top ten paranormally active counties in the UK as they stand to date (based on concentration of supernatural locales). With each location, we have included a sample of the reports we have received.

10) Berkshire - one paranormal location every 4.13 square miles

"My father witnessed a man in World War One uniform walking by the roadside near Newbury one night. He and his friend stopped to offer the solider a ride, but he had disappeared. He reported this phenomenon to a group of locals at the White Swan Pub, and received a very hushed, but entranced audience. He believes that the soldier has been seen by many people and is probably a local legend in those parts."

9) Wiltshire one paranormal location every 3.97 square miles
"It was a winter's evening and a friend and I thought it would be a good idea to cut through Lords Walk (a large wooded area in Amesbury). As we walked through the trees, a figure of a small lady suddenly appeared in front of us - she was grey but had a strange, slightly brighter outline to her. You couldn't see her face or any fine details. My natural instinct was to run, and as we backtracked, I looked over my shoulder to see the figure had vanished."

8) Derbyshire - one paranormal location every 3.96 square miles
"When I worked at Williamthorpe Colliery, I was told by several miners the story of a road man who was sitting having his snap in the Hard Coal on the road down to the shaft. He looked up & in the distance saw a light approaching as the figure passed him without stopping, he threw his light up to illuminate the figure. It was a person he knew well by the name of Marren who had died a few days previous. The figure walked past him & in 10 yards turned right where there was an airlock with a manrider train on the other side. In shock the roadman ran after the figure & went through the airlock but the figure had vanished. The roadman ran screaming to the shaft - such was his state that the deputy had to administer morphine & the man was stretchered out of the mine. On recovery the man terminated his employment."

7) West Midlands - one paranormal location every 3.91 square miles
"I was 14 years old in 1970, and on my way to school via a friend's house in Birmingham. It was winter and dark, and I saw a figure of a man glowing orange... no features just glowing... He must have been there for around 20 seconds then he vanished. My school friend said there had been other sightings of this apparition, and another friend of mine also saw it about 2 miles further down the road".

6) Nottinghamshire - one paranormal location every 3.69 square miles

"As I was driving through Newstead Abbey grounds, I heard tapping on roof of the car. I stopped to investigate & found nothing; when I got back into car to drive off I noticed a figure in the rear seat with wild black hair & face all cut & scarred. I've never been back!"

5) Essex - one paranormal location every 3.37 square miles
"We had lights turning on and off, footsteps running around the house at all hours when there was no one else in the house. Small children and animals would go hysterical for no reason spontaneously throughout the house. On one particular occasion a small child pointed out the back of the kitchen into the garden and yelled "man". The worst night was when one morning we came down stairs and found that every single electrical appliance had been un-plugged... this perhaps does not sound ominous if however that hadn't included a fridge freezer which was attached to a wall and usually took two or three people to move." (A home in Colchester, exact location details removed.)

4) Dorset - one paranormal location every 3.07 square miles
"Several people in the local area are still seeing the white lady at Millhams Lane, Longham. It is said she was hit by a horse and trap on the bridge whilst waiting for a loved one to meet her. It is also said she entices men to jump off the bridge as well..."

3) Lancashire - one paranormal location every 2.78 square miles
"I stayed at a hotel in Blackpool and was the only guest at the time. During the night I heard doors opening and closing and also the sound of heavy furniture being dragged across a wooden floor (the hotel is carpeted throughout). The next morning I told my friend (the landlady) and she had also said that she too had heard doors opening the very first night that they were there."

2) Isle of Wight - one paranormal location every 2.23 square miles
"I was 14 years old and was exploring the ruin of Hazeley Manor because my great Aunt had been a tenant during the war and my Mother had been evacuated there. I went upstairs to an attic type room with a sloping ceiling. As I went into the empty room there was a terrible feeling of fear and despair. The room was deadly cold although the day was warm. I fled. Eight years later I returned to find the building restored and open to the public, and discovered that a serving girl had once hung herself in the room where I had experienced the coldness."

1) Greater London - one paranormal location every 1.15 square miles

"I lived in Wanstead from 1985 onwards. One day I was in a car with some friends, it was about 12:30 at night and I saw an Asian woman standing on the kerb, right on the playing fields. I thought it was strange that she'd been for a walk by herself so late at night and I wondered if something was wrong. Anyway, she ran right in front of our car and it was way too late to brake - she looked right in the car at us and her face was awful - absolute fear and regret, I screamed so loudly, as did my other female friend, then we didn't hit anyone and as we turned back to see if she was laying in the road, there was no one there. I had to presume that she got away. The weird thing is that me and my friend who screamed, we were the only two girls and we were the only two people who saw this happen - all the boys wondered why we screamed as they didn't see a thing. A few years later I was talking ghost stories with a friend and he volunteered this up - he was driving back from a friend's house around that area in Wanstead and he and his girlfriend had the same thing happen to them - except they stopped the car and looked around for her, simply to see her walking in the road and evaporate before their eyes. He described her exactly how I saw her - exactly what she was wearing, her hair, everything. Poor lady."
