Nasa drops two archaic rockets onto the Moon's surface
![]()
NASA have succesfully fired an unmanned rocket into the Moon's surface in an attempt to find water-ice.
The 2,200kg rocket motor was a leftover piece of the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite that includes a "shepherding spacecraft" that followed behind the rocket motor before it too smashed into the moon. Ouch. Each rocket his the Cabeus Crater at the Moon's south pole.
Scientists expected some 350 metric tonnes of debris to be sent up to altitudes of 10km (6.2 miles). Any signs of water on the Moon's surface would be a massive boost for Nasa scientists, most notably because it would veastly improve the chances of creating a permanent lunar base.
