Black Panther and Stranger Things own the night at MTV Movie & TV Awards

Presented by: Jacob Oller

From the very opening of the MTV Movie & TV Awards, Black Panther and Stranger Things were the stars of the show -- even when the former had to cast show host Tiffany Haddish at the last second.

The Marvel record-breaker entered the evening with the highest number of nominations (seven) of any single film, matching nom numbers on the TV side with Stranger Things. As such, the pair proceeded to dominate the night. Haddish's skit that opened the show, while riffing on rapper Cardi B and featuring her challenging for the throne in the Wakandan waterfall fight, was most memorably a paean to star Michael B. Jordan’s cut supervillain bod.

Jordan, Chadwick Boseman, and Winston Duke made appearances on the red carpet, all mentioning their positive experience with the film. Jordan in particular, though his character Killmonger was, well, killed at the end of the movie, is ready and willing to return if Marvel or his frequent collaborator director Ryan Coogler needs him.

That sentiment was echoed in Duke’s silly Mountain Dew commercials, in which the actor commented on the death of a fictional hero by noting that franchise power and sequels would be better off with the character living.

Stranger Things won Best Musical Moment for its S2 finale dance featuring "Every Breath You Take" and some crush-ridden tweens, then followed it up with a win for Best Performance in a TV Show for Millie Bobby Brown, who missed the show due to a knee injury. Noah Schnapp also pulled in a win for Most Frightened Performance, because that kid can scream with the best of them.

The night got even more interesting when Boseman won Best Hero and brought up real-life hero James Shaw, Jr. -- who saved multiple lives by disarming a shooter attacking an Antioch, Tennessee Waffle House -- and gave him his award.

Stranger Things rounded out its plentiful evening with a win for Best Show, topping the TV awards. Black Panther and its stars went on to win four awards: Best Hero, Best Villain (Jordan), Best Performance in a Movie (Boseman), and Best Movie. That made it the winningest film of the night -- not to mention the plentiful ads, skits, and killer speeches featuring the cast.
