PEOPLE ARE FREAKING OUT ABOUT THE PORGS FROM THE NEW STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI TRAILER
Presented by: Matthew Jackson
If you look at Twitter this morning, though, one aspect of the trailer clearly won out over all of the others: porgs. Yes, the adorable furry bird creatures (only one features in the trailer) that share the island of Ahch-To with Luke were the clear stars of the new footage, in spite of all the other very dramatic moments.
We already knew about porgs — they feature in the behind-the-scenes reel released during this year's Star Wars Celebration, and they later got their own feature on the franchise's official website. But even director Rian Johnson cops that the massive attention they've been getting is starting to hit a new high.
“Are you sick of them yet?” Johnson jokingly quipped to Yahoo! Movies with a laugh as he recalled the reaction the critters got from crew members during the shoot. “It wasn’t until we got the actual puppets on set and the whole crew reacted with ‘Oh my God, they’re adorable!’ and also then a few people in the crew were giving them that suspicious side-eye of ‘These are cute, but are they too cute?’ ”
He doesn't seem too worried, though, about a backlash. "The overwhelming reaction on set was everybody loved the porgs," he added. "And I love ’em, so you know what? I get it if people are a little wary of cuteness in the Star Wars universe, but I personally love them, and I think they have their place in the movie.”
They certainly have their place in the Twitterverse: In the newly released trailer, fans saw one porg in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon letting out a cry they'd never heard before. Twitter got excited, to put it mildly.

Clearly, these creatures are on track to capture the hearts of moviegoers in the same way BB-8 captivated us during The Force Awakens. However, there's another very brief creature appearance that just might end up eclipsing them.

Oh, and if you'd like to brighten your day, watch this video of Oscar Isaac singing and mentally replace the word "Wars" with "Porgs." You're welcome.
